WorldCon 2013 Report: Day One — What Makes a Review Great?
Thursday, August 29, 2013
Panel: Alvaro Zinos-Amaro, Mari Kotani, D. Douglas Fratz, Moshe Feder, Liza Groen Trombi
This was a somewhat disappointing panel, chiefly because I expected more of a "here are the elements of a good book review" and it turned into more of a discussion of reviewing styles and how/why reviews are done.
Other Notes
- Use reviewers to guide us to authors and new and interesting work
- For new authors, or someone reviving their careers, it's a way to see what's going on
- There's too much out there
- Reviewing is a service industry
- Write a review enjoyable to read for its own sake
- Reviewing can be an art form in itself
- Something that makes me want to read something I otherwise wouldn't have
- Context in the field is important
- Reviewers should have a point of view
- No publicity is good publicity for some books
